Summer

In the summer, Waterton is both a vibrant hub of activity and a secluded natural paradise. You can set up camp, drop your line in a mountain stream or adventure into the cool splendour of a glacial lake. You can explore endless miles of trails by foot or mountain bike or simply wander the lake shore with an ice-cream cone in hand. Tee-off amid the snow-capped mountains or saddle up for a trail ride. Take one of the many guided tours offered in the park. You can travel through international waters by boat or enjoy a Park Interpretive program, including the unique International Peace Park Hike. Enjoy a picnic, visit one of our Gems or simply sit and take in the breathtaking beauty all around you.

Waterton is nature's playground and summer brings an abundance of wildlife, from brand new mule deer testing their new legs to heart-stopping bear sightings throughout the park. Whatever you want to experience this summer, Waterton is pure paradise.

Autumn

Autumn brings an entirely new character to Waterton. The days are still long and often unseasonably warm. Cool evenings offer a sky-full of starry wonder. The landscape renews itself through nature's brilliant transition into a new season. Wildlife is out in full force to prepare for the long winter ahead. Black bear, mule deer, elk and Big Horns are very visible at this time of year. This is mating season, so males in particular are most striking with fully grown antlers and glossy coats. This is also a spectacular time for bird watching as large numbers of water fowl take their migratory flight through the park.

You will find solitude on hiking trails, quiet camp grounds and breathtaking photographic opportunities. You can enjoy slower play on our golf course, quiet lakes for fishing and heart-pumping mountain biking trails. It's also an ideal time to experience everything our quaint village has to offer. Fall is the perfect time for a mountain getaway in Waterton.

Winter

Winter brings a deep quiet to Waterton, but does not diminish its beauty. Snow and ice formations change the landscape from a summer paradise to a winter adventure haven. You can experience miles of peaceful solitude on a snowshoeing or cross country ski expeditions and return to the comfort of one of our cozy lodges. Adrenalin seekers can reach an exhilarating high with awesome ice climbing opportunities. If you prefer a gentler winter experience, take a serene walk and hear only the snow crunching beneath your feet. Wildlife is still plentiful, with mule deer and elk as well as Big Horn sheep wandering through the area. You may even get to see some river otter cavorting on lake or creek ice. If you do travel to this winter paradise be prepared for conditions ranging from warm and windy to extreme cold and deep snow. Strong winds can create poor visibility, icy conditions and drifting snow on roads.

Spring

Waterton inherits a new kind of beauty at the first hint of spring. Beneath the slowly melting snow, wildflowers are making their way to the surface, unfolding like a painting against the natural canvas of rolling hills and Rocky Mountains. In fact, you can step out of your car from any roadside pullout and encounter twenty or thirty different species.

If you love to watch wildlife, there is no better place than springtime in Waterton. Mule deer and Big Horn sheep wander through the town and hundreds of elk descend from the high country to graze on the flat grasslands. The slow melt of the snow that has accumulated provides spring hikers and campers with plenty of adventure and makes river rafting just outside the park a thrill for adrenalin junkies. Shops and restaurants that have rested all winter open their doors to visitors and the village peacefully awakens to welcome the spring.
