Beginning at Red Rock Canyon, Avion ridge will take you on an adventure into the northwestern corner of Waterton. Cross the footbridge at the parking area and countinue along the Snowshoe Trail. Being a loop trail you can decide to divert up to Goat Lake or Lost Lake. If you decided to choose the latter you will have to continue walking until your arrive at Snowshoe Cabin. Once here locate the trail sign leading to Lost Lake. Just before arriving at Lost Lake the Avion Ridge diverts off towards Castle River Divide. This steep section of the hike switchbacks up to the ridge top. Passing through spacious alpine meadows surrounded by Larch trees, you will eventually finish your major ascent. Now at tree line, take in the panoramic views looking into Castle Provincial Park to the north. The ridge walk can be marvelous in fair weather with brilliant bands of red argillite to admire. In poor weather this ridge walk can be treacherous, so keep an eye on the weather and follow the markers if you begin to lose the trail. Eventually you will notice Goat Lake beneath you, this is where you will make your descent into the basin. Take a plunge into Goat Lake and recuperate yourself for the final journey back to the parking area. From Goat Lake back to the Red Rock Canyon it is approximately 6.5 km.
