Kootenai Lakes (Glacier National Park, USA)

Type of Hike

  • Day Hike

Trail Type

  • Moderate Hike
  • Open Hike

Offering up some of the best Moose habitat in Glacier National Park, the Kootenai Lakes trail usually doesn’t disappoint. Starting at the Goat Haunt Ranger station, this trail will take you past old growth Douglas Fir, Engelmann Spruce and Black Cottonwood trees as you follow the valley bottom. As the hike progresses towards the lakes, the ecosystem transitions to that of a marshy wetland. (Remember to bring ample bug spray, as the mosquitoes can be particularly fierce in this region of the park, depending on the season.) Moose are often times spotted in and around the lakes foraging for vegetation.

(A Boat Shuttle to Goat Haunt departs daily. Hikers must clear U.S Customs. See Waterton Shoreline Cruise for shuttle information)
