Lakeshore Trail

Type of Hike

  • Day Hike

Trail Type

  • Moderate Hike
  • Open Hike

This popular one-way hike joins the village of Waterton with the Goat Haunt Ranger Station. The trail can be completed in any direction however you must clear U.S Customs and arrange a boat ticket for a particular pick up or drop off time. The only major elevation gain is right at the beginning, between town and Bertha Bay. So take your pick, a relaxing boat ride back to the town or a final hill to climb before arriving at town. The trail follows the western shoreline of Upper Waterton Lake, with the International Border being the half way mark. Along the Canadian side you can enjoy access to various secluded beaches to go for a swim or enjoy a snack. The U.S side of the trail consists mostly of thick vegetation that can be very overgrown at time, with little to no access to the lake. Looking for a guided experience? The International Peace Park hike is led by two interpretive park rangers from both Canada and the United States. This hike departs from the Bertha Lake Trailhead every Tuesday and Friday at 10am. (RSVP space is limited. A Boat Shuttle to Goat Haunt departs daily. Hikers must clear U.S Customs.)
